Popular messaging service WhatsApp has launched its payment features in India. The company has launched this long-awaited service on testing base. Only a few beta testers are using this service now. WhatsApp has launched this service both for Android and iOS. It is using India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) for this service. The payment feature appears in the settings tab of the app. Here, it is important to mention that WhatsApp has announced to launch this service back in April 2017. This means that the company has launched this service after one year of the announcement.

The feature is not available for merchants. You can only send and receive payments from your friends and family members. The company has not put FAQ page in its payments section. But, the terms and conditions page and privacy policy page is there in the feature. You can check these pages before turning on payments feature of the application.

The payments feature is not visible in the WhatsApp settings for all users. But, if a user of this feature sends a message to the other user of WhatsApp without this feature, the feature will get activated. On re-launching the app, he will see the payments feature in his WhatsApp app too.

WhatsApp has partnered with ICICI Bank for supporting its UPI payment feature. The launch of this feature has made WhatsApp a competitor of other messaging services that have payment feature also. Google Tez and Tencent backed Hike are among the top competitors. WhatsApp will also face tough competition from mobile wallets that are already providing this facility. But, the experts are hopeful that WhatsApp will beat all these because of its huge customer database. WhatsApp has more than 200 million users in India.
