On Thursday, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Edappadi K. Palaniswami launched a website www.plasticpollutionfreetn.org, to make his state pollution-free and to eradicate the throwaway of plastics in Tamil Nadu. The popular actors like Karthi, Suriya, Jyothika, and Vivek are made the brand ambassadors for this campaign by the government of Tamil Nadu. Edappadi has also launched a mobile application to stop the use of plastics in the state from January 1, 2019. Short films were also released to promote on how to recycle plastic waste.

Participating in the function that was held at State Secretariat, Mr. Palaniswami said that in order to have a healthy state, stop using plastic bags and use paper bags or cloth bags or a biodegradable material as an alternative. Plastic affects the environment and has several ill-effects. Deputy Chief Minister O.Paneerselvam and Chief Secretary Girija also joined the function, sources said.

The brand ambassadors and social activist, Vivek, Karthi, Suriya, and Jyothika will be carrying forward the message of eradication of plastic from Tamil Nadu. Brand ambassadors will carry a campaign and will strive to give awareness among the people. They will also highlight the ill-effects of using plastic.

The Greater Chennai Corporation enforced a strict ban of plastic bags to a thickness of fewer than 40 microns. The one-time use plastic and then throw away causes severe problems.

The initiatives are with the State Government’s announcement coinciding on World Environment Day on 5th June, to ban the use of plastics which includes non-biodegradable bags from Jan 1, 2019, to make a pollution and a plastic-free environment in the state.

Palaniswami distributed file folders made up of paper to the ministers and Chief Secretary Girija. He extended a loan of up to Rs 22 lakhs to five plastic manufacturers to shift their business to eco-friendly metal plates.

Our sources have reported that the State government has also appointed three regional coordinators in the IAS rank for effective implementation on the ban of plastics. The regions are Chennai, Madurai, Trichy, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, and Salem.
