Hundreds of angry protesters came out on the road and clashed with police after a 20-year old black man named Daunte Martin was shot dead by the police. The incident happened in Minnesota on Sunday afternoon. Later, people gathered outside the police headquarters in Brooklyn Center, chanting Daunte Wright’s name. Soon, the whole situation turned worse when the protest broke into a riot, as a result of which, the authorities imposed a night curfew.
Still, the people defied the night curfew and threw fireworks, stones, and bottles at the police. To bring the situation under control, the police also fired tear gas on the protesters.
The protesters clashed with the police in Brooklyn Centre, where Derek Chauvin’s trial, the accused of the George Floyd killing, was taking place.
What happened according to the police?
After the incident, Minnesota’s Governor Tim Walz quickly got into action and tweeted, “I am closely monitoring the situation in Brooklyn Center as our state mourns another life of a Black man taken by law enforcement.”
The accused police officer was later named Kim Potter. According to the police officials, Daunte Wright was to be held for a traffic violation. Hence, he was pulled over by the police officers on Sunday at around 2 pm. As per the police, Wright was not ready to give in and tried to drive away when the officers tried to take him into custody. Kim Potter, the accused officer, mistook her gun for a taser and went after Wright, and the gun was shot “accidentally”.
The police said, “Officers and medical personnel performed life-saving measures, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.”
Later, a press conference was held on Monday, where Brooklyn Center police chief Tim Gannon clarified the happenings of Sunday afternoon. The officials presented a footage from one of the officers’ bodycam. It showed Kim Potter pointing her gun at Daunte, which she mistook for her taser, as she was heard saying that she was going to use her taser. Wright was also seen driving away in the footage while Potter was heard saying, “Holy shit, I just shot him”. After that, Daunte’s car drove out of control in a zig-zag manner and collided with other vehicles.
Tim Cannon said, “It is my belief the officer meant to deploy their Taser but shot him with a single bullet.” Moreover, Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott promised to ensure justice for Daunte Wright. He said, “Our hearts are aching right now, we are in pain right now. We recognize this couldn’t have happened at a worse time. This is happening at a time that all of our community, all of America, indeed all of the world is watching.”
As of now, the officer Kim Potter has been put on administrative leave and
