On Monday, the only Muslim candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Madhya Pradesh said that her reason behind joining BJP was Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The Muslim candidate conveyed that she was pretty much impressed by the good work being done by the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh for all sections of the society.
The Muslim candidate of Bharatiya Janata Party named Fatima Rasool Siddique is a daughter of the former state minister and Congress leader Rasool Ahmed Siddique. While addressing the news reporters, Fatima said, “she saw Mr Chouhan, who was heading the BJP government in the state since 2005, as a secular politician”.
The 35-year-old Fatima Rasool Siddique joined the BJP last Thursday and got the party ticket to fight the upcoming Assembly polls from the Bhopal North seat. Fatima will fight against Arif Aqueel who has been five-time MLA of the Congress and had contested against her father in 1993.
In the last Assembly elections also, BJP fielded a Muslim candidate from Bhopal North. In the previous polls in 2013, Arif Beg from BJP lost against Arif Aqueel by a margin of 7,000 votes.
Sources have reported that Fatima Siddique’s family has strong links with the Congress. Besides this, her father participated and won twice in the elections in 1980 and 1985 from Bhopal North as the Congress candidate. However, in 1993, Rasool Siddique lost the election from Bhopal North to the BJP’s Ramesh Sharma.
Fatima Siddique further informed about her father and said that her father was a staunch advocate of “Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb” (secularism) all his life. Fatima then compared her father with Mr Chouhan and said that she saw the same personality in the Chief Minister of MP and affirmed that he is doing good work in the favour of the people of all castes and creed.
“One of my priorities is to work towards improving the education infrastructure in my region,” she said.
For the Assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh on November 28, The Congress has fielded three Muslim candidates. Arif Masood (Bhopal Central) and Massarat Shahid (Siron in Vidisha district) are the two Muslim nominees from Congress besides Aqueel.
The poll results will be announced on December 11.
