Scientists are trying to find signs of life on heavenly objects other than Earth. The Mars and the Moon are the main focus of them. They are searching some signs of water on these two planets. This is because water is the basic need of living things and without its presence life is unimaginable. They have sent various spaceships to study the atmosphere of these planets. All these missions bring various samples of land from these planets. And now, the scientists have found some water reservoirs under the surface of the moon. These reservoirs are enough for the use of astronaut in future lunar colonies.

This water is in the form of ‘glass beads’ distributed across the surface of the moon. The study of the satellite data has revealed that the moon contains high amounts of trapped water. The presence of water in these deep deposits supports the idea that the lunar mantle is rich with water. Scientists believed this idea long ago that the interior of the moon is rich with water and other volatile components.

Apollo 15 and Apollo 17 are the two reputed missions sent to the moon in 2008. Both these missions brought back volcanic glass beads to the earth. A very minute examination of these glass beads proved the presence of water in them. The scientists further studied the crystal objects inside these beads and also proved that water is present in them. They even say that the amount of water in these beads is equal to the amount of water present in basalts of the earth.

Here, one question arises whether these samples brought by Apollo indicate that the lunar surface is rich with water or not. They also doubt that these samples may represent some water rich regions of the surface. The study of Orbital data shows that there are large deposits of water on the surface of the moon. Apollo mission never showed such quantity of water. But, we can say that almost all the lunar missions gave some indication of water which is enough to prove that most of the lunar surface is wet.

The scientists have used spectrometers to measure the various minerals and other components on the surface of the moon. They study the wavelengths of light which either absorbs or reflects back. They have also used Moon Mineralogy Mapper to study the surface of the moon. All these studies prove that there are water rich deposits spread across the surface.
