A section of the Majherhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday signing it as the third such incident in last six years in Kolkata resulting at the end of a life and leaving around 25 people injured.
The locals shared that several red flags were raised over a crack that had occurred on a pillar of the bridge and several complaints were filed at Public Works Department (PWD) department for the same. The latest complaint was lodged in around six months ago but the ignorance of the govt ended with the collapse of the bridge.
Within two years, it is the second incident where a bridge collapsed during busy hours in the city. The last incident reported was in March 2016 where an under-construction flyover in north Kolkata collapsed, ending 27 lives.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who is currently on an administrative tour, said “There will be a detailed investigation into it. But our first priority is the rescue operation. There will be a high-power committee led by the chief secretary that will probe into the negligence and other issues. We generally monitor the bridges every six months and take corrective measures. We need to find out what went wrong in this case. But now our focus is on the rescue operation. It is a serious negligence and strict action will be taken,” assuring the people for the proper investigation and justice.
The Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh called the Chief Minister of state and offered full assistance to the state.
Four teams of National Disaster Response Force were functioning to rescue lives at the accident place.
The bridge which collapsed and sucked a life has suburban rail tracks under it.
State urban development minister Firhad Hakim claimed that Majherhat bridge in south Kolkata was built 40 years ago by Kolkata Port Trust (KopT). However, KoPT denies the fact and said, “KoPT does not have any records of Majherhat Bridge been built by Kolkata port.”
CPM MP Mohammed Salim who lives near the bridge called it as “sorry state of affair” and said that local people had been complaining of the cracks showing on the pillars from last one year. A team of engineers visited and inspected the spot but the repairing work never initiated. He guessed that funds were allocated and invested on paper for the bridge.
