On Wednesday, an IIT Guwahati 18-year-old student committed suicide as she was unhappy about the course which she was pursuing from the Indian Institutes of Technology Guwahati.
As per the sources, the student name Nagashree SC was pursuing engineering from the IIT and was a first-year mechanical engineering student. On Wednesday, Nagashree committed suicide as she was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her hostel room. The incident took place in the campus of IIT Guwahati which is on the outskirts of Guwahati, reported sources.
Nagashree hailed from Hosanagara near Shimoga in Karnataka.
“Her roommate had gone to attend classes. When she returned she found the room locked. She made phone calls to Nagashree which went unanswered. She then informed the security,” an IIT spokesperson said.
As soon as Nagashree’s roommate informed the IIT security officials, the officials informed the local police about the situation which broke into the locked room. When the door got opened, Nagashree was found dead hanging from the ceiling fan of her room.
A brief suicide note written in English was found in the room.
“She seemed to be depressed that she had to pursue engineering. She also wrote how she could not fulfil the expectations of her parents,” Sanjib Saikia, Additional Superintendent of Police, Kamrup, said.
“Engineering sucks,” she wrote in the suicide note, according to Saikia.
IIT spokesperson revealed that Nagashree joined the course a few days back and would have hardly completed one-and-a-half months with the campus of IIT Guwahati. Besides this, the IIT spokesperson also informed that the student recently attended the counselling session that was mandatory for first-year students. There was nothing abnormal that could be noticed at the time of interaction, the spokesperson added.
Regarding the campus, the spokesperson informed that IIT Guwahati has four counsellors for around 6,000 students.
