NASA has captured a galaxy smaller in size than Milky Way. It has captured this remote galaxy with the help of advanced telescopes and gravitational lens. According to NASA, it is one of the oldest galaxies found ever in-universe. It says that ‘SPT0615-JD’ had existed when the universe was only 500 million years old. NASA clarifies that Hubble and Spitzer’s telescopes have given a clear picture of the galaxy. The gravitational lens has further magnified the image. The most surprising fact about this image is that it gives more information about the galaxy than any other image of any galaxy.

The lead author of the study Brett Salmon says that gravitational lens has helped a lot in determining the actual size and shape of the galaxy. Here, it is worth mentioning that scientists have already discovered many galaxies in the universe. But, they were unable to capture their proper images. Even the captured images looked like red dots due to smaller size and remoteness from the Earth. But, here in SPT0615-JD, the gravitational lens clarifies the images.

Here, a question arises in mind is that what a gravitational lens is. It is bending of light rays from an object in the background. This light returns to the observer making the image brighter and focused. Einstein in his theory of relativity explained this gravitational force about a century ago. His theory states that the gravity of large objects warps space. Nowadays, the astronomers use this concept for zooming images of space objects.

The size and weight of this remote galaxy predicted with the help of telescopes and gravitational lens proves that it is smaller than Milky Way. Its weight is three billion solar masses and it spreads along 2500 light-years. Milky Way has 580 billion solar masses weight and spreads along 100000 light-years.
