Early life and family
Wintour was brought into the world in Hampstead, London in 1949, to Charles Wintour (1917–1999), supervisor of the Evening Standard, and Eleanor “Nonie” Trego Baker (1917–1995), an American, the girl of a Harvard Law School professor. Her folks were hitched in 1940 and separated in 1979. Wintour was named after her maternal grandma, Anna Baker (Gilkyson), a vendor’s girl from Pennsylvania. Audrey Slaughter, a magazine editorial manager who established distributions, for example, Honey and Petticoat, is her stepmother.
