The first penguin baby “Freedom Baby” died on Wednesday due to various health issues in the Byculla Zoo.
The penguin was born on 15 August and was named as “Freedom baby” in the Byculla Zoo. The newly born baby belonged to Humboldt penguin pair — Molt and Flipper suffered sudden shrink in health and died on Wednesday.
The statement released by the zoo authorities shared that all efforts and measures were taken by the veterinary team to save the baby penguin but chick passed away on the night of 22 August.
The post-mortem was done by a team of professors from the Bombay Veterinary College in Parel and report shared that chick had developed anomalies like yolk sac retention and liver dysfunction which caused its death.
The zoo officials said that only 60% mortality rate in penguin eggs exists. The baby penguins due to multiple reasons such as malpositioning of the chick inside the egg, infertility of egg, chick deformity, failure to hatch, the inability of parents to feed the chick, yolk sac retention, etc are reasons behind the death.
The Penguin couple father Mr Molt and mother Flipper got parenthood on 15 August at 8.03 PM. Mama Penguin was bought along with the eight penguins to the Byculla zoo. The mother laid an egg on July 5 and it hatched and gave the new baby penguin.
Aditya Thackeray has recommended adding penguins to Mumbai Zoo from Seoul, South Korea. The project was criticized but Thackrey managed to have them in the zoo in June 2016.
Mr Aditya Thackrey received hard words when a penguin died but newly born baby added hope.
On July 5 it was reported that couple Molt and Flipper had a single egg in the nest built by them and a baby was born on 15 August.
The death of newly born will surely lead to the criticism.
