Ellen DeGeneres has given a shock to her fans and everybody by announcing the end of her worldwide famous talk-show “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”. The comedian and TV host has planned on wrapping up the show in 2022.
Ellen quoted the lack of challenge as the reason behind ending the show. She said, “When you’re a creative person, you constantly need to be challenged – and as great as this show is, and as fun as it is, it’s just not a challenge anymore.” Other than that, DeGeneres has also told that she will sit down with her long-time friend and TV host Oprah Winfrey to discuss the news on Ellen‘s May 13th show.
The upcoming season of the show will be the 19th and the last season. Ellen informed her staff on May 11th. According to the reports, Ellen’s decision of ending the show have been in her mind for several years.
DeGeneres has always been open about bringing the show to an end, however, she always struggled to decide when. As told by Ellen in an interview in 2018, her wife Portia wanted her to move on from the show, whereas her brother, who is also a comedian, encouraged her to carry on. Finally, Ellen again signed with the production for three more seasons, but she always shared her intention with the producers and staff that this contract was going to be her last.
Warner Bros.’ Unscripted TV President, Mike Darnell, is still trying to get Ellen to reconsider her decision. He called the show “an absolute phenomenon” and said, “Although all good things must come to an end, you still have hope that truly great things never will.”
This decision by Ellen has met with mixed to negative reactions from the people. As this decision comes after the allegations of toxic environment for employees and sexual misconduct at the set, people are questioning if lack of challenge is really the reason to end the show.
Apparently, these allegations made hard for the show to go on as it led advertisers to walk out, and the team was reportedly struggling to book A-list celebrities. Moreover, the show also started losing its ratings and viewership. Certainly, ending the extremely famous day time talk show under such circumstances marks a stunning fall for Ellen.
