NEW DELHI: As per the data analysed by Association of Democratic Reforms aka ADR, Congress candidates fighting in the first phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh declared the highest number of criminal cases.

Association of Democratic Reforms has reported that out of the 18 candidates that were filed by the Congress party regarding the elections that were held today, 39 per cent have declared criminal cases against them. Thus, 7 out of 18 candidates filed were having criminal cases against them.

Out of the 7 candidates that were having criminal cases against them, four candidates have serious criminal cases. These four candidates out of the seven have cases related to bribery causing death by negligence and criminal intimidation, among others, say reports from Association of Democratic Reforms.

On the other hand, Bhartiya Janta Party which is the major rival of Congress in the elections have no such candidates in the first phase of Chhattisgarh assembly polls that have such criminal cases against them.

Besides the Congress, there were several other parties including Janta Congress Chhattisgarh that have candidates with declared criminal cases against them. Out of the total of 10 candidates been put up by the Ajit Jogi’s Janta Congress Chhattisgarh, three candidates have declared criminal cases against them.

Calculating the total percentage of the candidates that were having criminal cases filed against them and were fighting in the first phase of the polls, a total of 15 candidates out of 187 candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. This makes a total of 8 per cent candidates in the first phase of the polls which have declared criminal cases against them.

As per the data by the Association of Democratic Reforms, Jagdalpur constituency had the most number of candidates with declared criminal cases.

In Chattisgarh, the first phase of the polls took place for 18 seats today, out of the total of 90 assembly seats in the state. Of the 18 seats in the first phase of the state Assembly elections, 12 are in Bastar and six in Rajnandgaon district.
