New Delhi – 17 army soldiers were killed and more than 19 terrorists were injured in a suicide bombing on the military camp in Uri sector of J&K. The terrorists, who were four in number, attacked the camp near the headquarter of the 12th brigade at Uri in Baramulla District.

The large toll of causalities in the army camp can be attributed to the reason that soldiers of the Dogra Regiment were residing in the temporary tents and other structures in the camp and as the suicide bombers hit the camp, the tents caught fire and it spread to the other parts of the camp killing many soldiers.

The soldiers were resting as the attack was done at early morning hours near 4:00 AM. This terror attack is believed to be an act of heavily armed terrorists who infiltrated through LoC along Salambad Nallah.

The army has taken over the control of the situation and search operations are going on. On the other side, the neutralizing and sanitizing operations are also going on in the attacked area. Army has deployed helicopters from Army’s 19th Division headquarters to evacuate the injured soldiers.

General Dalbir Singh Suhag and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar are going to Kashmir to look into the situation. They may also meet the injured. Union Home Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh has postponed his Russia and US departure and is monitoring the situation.

He spoke with J&K CM Mehbooba Mufti and Governor N.N. Vohra about the attack. He also conducted a high-level meeting and instructed the Union Home Secretary Rajeev Maharishi and other MHA officers to monitor the situation closely.

There have been several attacks on the armed forces in Kashmir but this one is deadliest in the recent times. These attacks on armed troops in India especially in J&K have become major international diplomatic issues.
